The Salt Pans of Kitrous Lagoon, part of the Natura 2000 network, is a protected area of exceptional ecological importance, extending over approximately 15,000 hectares in northern Pieria. It consists of the lagoon, the surrounding wetlands, the salt marshes, the coastal dunes and its natural landscape.

‘’ Saltiness” is one of the five primary basic tastes the human tongue can detect. Those 5 tastes are: salt, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami .

This area is home to rich biodiversity, with particular importance for birdlife and reptiles. Especially in winter, the lagoon becomes a refuge for hundreds of flamingos, while it is an important feeding and resting point for many other species.

The lagoon is almost cut off from the sea, with the flow of water controlled by a special sluice gate.

In addition to salt production, the area is protected for its unique flora and fauna, such as the coastal dunes with the sea lily, as well as for the land turtles, which live there in the highest density in the world.
